He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications from Elon College and a law degree from Quinnipiac University School of Law. He was admitted to the North Carolina State Bar in 2000. His career as a prosecutor began in the Cleveland and Lincoln County District Attorney's office. In 2002, he joined the Wayne, Lenoir, and Greene County District Attorney's office as an Assistant District Attorney, a role he held until 2017. Since 2017, he has served as the Homicide & Arson Resource Prosecutor for the North Carolina Conference of District Attorneys. Muskus is also a Fire Captain with the North Lenoir Fire & Rescue, having joined as a firefighter in 2006.
