Michael Tann is a United States Army veteran, having served four years on active duty and four years in the reserve. Following his military service, he joined the California Department of Corrections, where he worked for 25 years, retiring at the rank of associate warden. After retiring from law enforcement, he was involved in his children's school as a parent club president and later as a parent council president for the district. He also worked with the Bakersfield Police Department to form an advisory board to improve community relations. Though not a native of Greenville, he chose to move to the city after his final retirement.
