Michael David Whatley was born in North Carolina in 1968 or 1969. He earned a bachelor's degree in history from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, a master's degree in religion from Wake Forest University, and both a Juris Doctor and a master's in theology from the University of Notre Dame. His political career began working for George W. Bush's Florida recount team in 2000. He later served in the Bush administration's Department of Energy and as chief of staff for U.S. Senator Elizabeth Dole. From 2019 to 2024, he was the chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party. In March 2024, he was elected chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC), a position he held until August 2025.
