Mike Rounds is a lifelong South Dakotan born in Huron as the eldest of 11 children. He was sworn into the U.S. Senate on January 6, 2015, and serves on five committees: Appropriations; Armed Services; Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs; Indian Affairs; and the Select Committee on Intelligence. Previously he served as the 31st governor of South Dakota (2003–2011) and five terms in the South Dakota State Senate, including six years as Senate Majority Leader. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from South Dakota State University and built an insurance and real estate business with offices throughout the state. He resides in Fort Pierre and is the parent of four grown children and 11 grandchildren.
