A Democrat and U.S. Army veteran who served in Vietnam, he previously represented California's 1st and 5th Districts before redistricting. Prior to his election to Congress, Thompson served in the California State Senate from 1990 to 1998. In the House, he serves on the Committee on Ways and Means.
