Nanette Diaz Barragán is the U.S. Representative for California's 44th congressional district, an office she has held since 2017. Born in Harbor City, Los Angeles, she is the youngest of eleven children of immigrants from Mexico. Barragán grew up in the surrounding area and attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she earned a B.A. in political science. She then received her Juris Doctor from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law in 2005. Her early career in public service included a role in the Clinton White House in the Office of Public Liaison and work with the NAACP on racial health disparities. Before her election to Congress, she served on the Hermosa Beach City Council from 2013 to 2015, where she successfully opposed a proposal for oil drilling.
