Nydia Velázquez is an American politician serving as the U.S. Representative for New York's 7th congressional district since 2013, having previously represented the 12th district from 1993 to 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, she was the first Puerto Rican woman elected to Congress. Born in Puerto Rico, she earned a master's degree from New York University. Prior to her congressional service, she served on the New York City Council and was a special assistant to Rep. Edolphus Towns.
