Prior to her appointment, she was an Assistant District Attorney in Mecklenburg County from 2004 to 2008 and worked as an attorney in private practice from 2000 to 2004. She was admitted to the North Carolina Bar in 2000. McThenia earned her J.D. from Washington & Lee University in 2000, a master's degree in English literature from Boston University in 1995, and her undergraduate degree from The Evergreen State College in 1989.
