He was first elected to the Weymouth Town Council in 2005 at age 21 and later served as Town Council President; he also worked as legislative director for State Senator Bob Hedlund. O'Connor won a special election to the Massachusetts Senate on May 10, 2016 and represents the First Plymouth and Norfolk District, where he serves as Assistant Minority Leader.
