Raised in a working-class family (his father was a Teamster), he became an IBEW union member working as a lineman at the local phone company and used union benefits to pursue higher education, earning associate, bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and law degrees. Elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives (2nd Berkshire District) in 2010, he advocates for Medicare-for-all, higher-education funding reform and student-debt relief, climate solutions, and affordable transportation and high-speed broadband for Western Massachusetts.
