Rashad Ahmed Hauter is a District Court Judge in Wake County, North Carolina, a position he has held since his appointment in 2021. He was elected to a full term in 2022. Hauter is recognized as the first Yemeni American and first Muslim American judge in North Carolina. A first-generation immigrant from Gatham, Yemen, his family moved to the U.S. fleeing poverty. He graduated as valedictorian from Southern Vance High School and was the first in his family to attend college. He earned a B.A. in biology and Asian studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2007 and a J.D. from Campbell University School of Law in 2011. Prior to his judgeship, Hauter served as an Assistant District Attorney in Wake County, a statewide resource prosecutor for the North Carolina Conference of District Attorneys, and an attorney in private practice focusing on criminal defense and immigration law.
