Ray Smith

Ray Smith, a 34-year-old software engineer, is running as a Democrat for the Georgia State Senate District 46 in 2026. Originally from Macon, he graduated from the University of Georgia in 2015 with a degree in computer science. After working in financial technology, he moved back to the Athens area and was inspired to run for office following the birth of his son and increased community involvement. He serves as the second vice-chair of the Oconee County Democratic Party and co-founded the nonprofit Community Works Oconee. Smith's campaign focuses on affordability, healthcare access, and supporting working families. He advocates for diverse housing options to address rising costs and expresses concern over property tax reductions impacting school funding. He also supports expanding Medicaid to improve healthcare access, especially in rural areas.
