Richard Barrera has served on the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education since 2008 and has held the position of Board President. A San Diego native, Barrera earned a bachelor's degree in history from UC San Diego and a master's degree in public policy from Harvard University. Prior to his school board service, he spent years working as a community organizer for healthcare workers, nurses, and domestic workers. He is running for California Superintendent of Public Instruction.
