He is the first Filipino American to hold this office. Prior to this role, he was a member of the California State Assembly for the 18th district from 2012 to 2021 and served on the Alameda City Council from 2010 to 2012. Before his career in elected office, Bonta worked as a Deputy City Attorney for the City and County of San Francisco. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in History from Yale University and a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School.
