Korthuis graduated from the University of Washington in 1982 with Bachelor of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering. His career began in the pulp and paper industry where he developed more efficient cleaning systems for pulp. After six years, he became a partner in a manufacturing company that builds specialty harvesting equipment, earning multiple patents for machinery used to harvest blueberries, coffee, grapes, oranges, and olives.
