Sean Patrick McCoy was born in Pocatello, Idaho. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy after high school and served for eight years, including four years of active duty as a Damage Controlman, deploying to the Persian Gulf. After his military service, he worked as a U.S. Forest Service Wildland Firefighter and a Smokejumper. He later earned a degree in English Literature from the University of Montana. McCoy and his partner run Frank's Little Farm in Missoula. He has served on the Missoula Consolidated Planning Board for five years, including three as president, and has been a board member for the Missoula Farmers Market since 2014.
