As a social worker, she champions social services, serving on committees such as Veterans & Military, Social Services Budget, and Health and Human Services, where she is the Ranking Minority Member. She also worked on interim committees related to home and community-based services, KanCare, child welfare, and targeted case management. Ruiz, who holds BSW and MSW degrees, made history as one of the state’s first openly LGBT state legislators.
