Suzanne Bonamici grew up in Michigan and moved to Oregon after high school. She worked her way through Lane Community College and the University of Oregon (B.A. in journalism) and earned her J.D. from the University of Oregon. She began her career at Legal Aid, then worked as a consumer protection attorney for the Federal Trade Commission and in private practice. She served in the Oregon House (elected 2006) and Oregon Senate (2008–2011), and was first elected to the U.S. Congress in a 2012 special election. She serves on the Education and Workforce Committee and the Science, Space, and Technology Committee and co-founded the STEAM Caucus.
