Born and raised in Detroit, he holds an AB in Philosophy and Economics from Dartmouth College, studied graduate mathematics at Wayne State University, and earned a master's degree in economics from the University of Michigan, where he is also a PhD candidate. Reeves is the founder and managing director of two nonprofits and works as a graduate student instructor.
