Tom Perriello is a former U.S. Representative and U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan. He previously served as special envoy for the Great Lakes Region of Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and was executive director for U.S. Programs at Open Society Foundations. Perriello ran for Virginia Governor in 2017. He is now seeking the Democratic nomination for U.S. House in Virginia's 6th Congressional District in the 2026 election, having pivoted from an initial run in the 5th District after redistricting created new opportunities. He is known for "conviction politics" and previously supported progressive legislation like the Affordable Care Act.
