Vernetta Alston

Vernetta Alston is an attorney and politician who has served in the North Carolina House of Representatives since being appointed in April 2020. Prior to her role in the state legislature, she was a member of the Durham City Council from 2017 to 2020. Alston earned her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from North Carolina State University and her J.D. from the University of North Carolina School of Law. Her legal career includes working as a staff attorney for North Carolina Prisoner Legal Services and the Center for Death Penalty Litigation. A notable achievement in her legal career was her role as co-counsel for Henry McCollum, who was exonerated and released in 2014 after being wrongfully incarcerated for 31 years.
