Vernon G. Smith is a Democratic member of the Indiana House of Representatives, representing District 14 since 1990. Prior to joining the state legislature, he served on the Gary City Council starting in 1972. He served as Ranking Minority Member of the Indiana House Education Committee. Smith spent over 50 years as an educator, including 33 years as a professor at Indiana University Northwest, retiring in 2025. He is also the founder of the African-American Achievers Youth Corps.
