Representative in Congress District 1

Victor Weintraub, a Progressive Democrat and retired businessman, sought to represent Arizona's 1st Congressional District in the 2026 U.S. House primary. Originally from New York, he earned degrees from New York University and Columbia University. Weintraub had a 40-year career as president of First Charter Financial Corporation, a commercial mortgage lender specializing in hospitality and commercial loans. He presented himself as a different candidate, not a lawyer or politician, committed to action, and running out of obligation to protect democracy. Despite launching a campaign, he will not appear on the Democratic primary ballot on July 21, 2026, having withdrawn from the race.

Where does Victor Weintraub stand on the issues?

  • Healthcare Access & Affordability

    Supports

Supports expanding Medicare to cover all Americans, funded by a small employer tax on earnings, to remove private insurance profit from the health care system.

We need to expand Medicare to cover all Americans. Instead of paying an insurance company for coverage, we will pay a health care tax to a government agency, which administers and pays for our health care.

  • Higher Education Affordability

    Supports

Supports a federal subsidy to states so they can provide two years of low-cost higher education (junior college) to all qualifying Americans, to raise national educational attainment.

I suggest that the federal government provide a subsidy to all states so that the cost of junior college becomes very low.

  • Immigration

    Mixed

Calls for a reasonable, reviewed immigration system providing relief for Dreamers and fair treatment of long-term resident laborers, plus a merit/background-based legal immigration pathway; does not endorse open borders or mass deportation.

We should seriously look at the situation of the people that we call dreamers. We should also look at long-term residents who are just laborers. We also need a system that allows people to immigrate based on background, education, and economic factors.
