He graduated from Freedom High School in 1987 and subsequently attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, earning a Bachelor of Science in National Security and Public Affairs in 1991. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Field Artillery and served for over six years. In 1997, he left active duty to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law, where he graduated with honors in 2000. After law school, he returned to his hometown of Morganton to practice law in his family's firm. He was first elected to the North Carolina Senate in 2010 and is currently in his seventh term. He serves as co-chair of the Senate Judiciary, Appropriations on Justice and Public Safety, and Redistricting and Elections Committees.
