William Francis Gates Jr. is a former New York City firefighter, architect, and educator who ran for the 2026 Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts. Born in 1971 in Park Slope, Brooklyn, he earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy and a master's degree in architecture from the University at Buffalo. He won an international architectural design competition, then joined the FDNY after the September 11 attacks, serving with Ladder 11 in Manhattan until a 2015 medical retirement tied to illnesses from his Ground Zero recovery work. He moved to Worcester, Massachusetts in 2017, taught at Mount Ida College, and is pursuing a Doctor of Education at Northeastern University. A self-described lifelong Democrat who embraces democratic socialist principles, he campaigned on Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, and free public college.
