Smith gained significant local recognition for organizing a large-scale volunteer relief effort, dubbed the "Redneck Air Force," in response to the devastation from Hurricane Helene in 2024. This operation mobilized hundreds of veterans and volunteers to deliver millions of pounds of supplies to isolated communities in Western North Carolina.
