Paul Maddox is a professor, entrepreneur, and cancer researcher who was raised in Yancey and Buncombe Counties in Western North Carolina. He graduated from Enka High School before earning a bachelor's degree in biology and a Ph.D. from UNC-Chapel Hill. After completing postdoctoral training at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in San Diego, he returned to UNC in 2013 as a professor in the Department of Biology. Maddox has published over 100 scientific articles, developed numerous patents, and founded two small businesses focused on cancer research. He and his wife, Amy, who is also a biology professor and cancer researcher, have two daughters.
