Antonio Ramón Villaraigosa, born Antonio Ramón Villar Jr. on January 23, 1953, served as the 41st Mayor of Los Angeles from 2005 to 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, he was the first Hispanic to hold the post since 1872. Previously, he served as the Speaker of the California State Assembly from 1998 to 2000. Villaraigosa grew up in East Los Angeles and attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and the People's College of Law. Before his political career, he worked as a union organizer for United Teachers Los Angeles and served as president of the Southern California chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). He also ran for governor in 2018, placing third in the primary.
