Sheriff Scott Hammonds was raised in Beaufort County and graduated from Southern Nash High School in 1984. He earned an Associate of Applied Science in Criminal Justice Technology from Beaufort Community College in 2009. His law enforcement career began in 1993 as a part-time police officer in Chocowinity and later as a part-time Deputy at the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office. He also worked for the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles before joining the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, where he served for 16 years, retiring as a Sergeant. In 1985, he joined the North Carolina Army National Guard, rising to the rank of Military Police First Sergeant and receiving the Long Leaf Pine Award for over thirty years of service. He was elected Sheriff of Beaufort County in 2022.
