Carolyn Barbara Kuhl has been a judge on the Superior Court of California for the County of Los Angeles since 1995. She received a bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Princeton University in 1974 and a J.D. from Duke Law School in 1977. After law school, she clerked for Anthony Kennedy, who was then a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. From 1981 to 1986, Kuhl served in the U.S. Department of Justice in various roles, including Deputy Solicitor General and Deputy Assistant Attorney General. She was a partner at the law firm Munger, Tolles & Olson from 1986 to 1995, focusing on civil business and appellate litigation. In 2001, President George W. Bush nominated her to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, but the nomination was withdrawn in 2004.
