Daniel T. Blue Jr. was born in Lumberton, North Carolina, and raised on his family's farm in Robeson County. He graduated with a B.S. in Mathematics from North Carolina Central University in 1970 and earned his J.D. from Duke University School of Law in 1973. In 1980, he was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives, where he served for over two decades. From 1991 to 1994, Blue served as the Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives, the first African American to hold that position. He has been a member of the North Carolina State Senate, representing District 14, since 2009. Outside of his legislative career, he is a managing partner at the law firm Blue LLP in Raleigh. He has also served as Chairman of the Duke University Board of Trustees.
