Derek Kitchen is a Democrat with a history of public service in Utah, having served on the Salt Lake City City Council and as a Utah State Senator. He is known for successfully challenging Utah's ban on same-sex marriage. Kitchen is also a restaurant owner and, in 2023, was appointed senior vice president at the federal Export-Import Bank by President Biden. He launched a campaign for the U.S. House in Utah's newly redrawn 1st Congressional District for the 2026 election, aiming to represent a new left-leaning district as a progressive leader. He subsequently withdrew from the Democratic primary race.
