A member of the Democratic Party, he previously worked as a middle school and 9th-grade teacher. Wegela was active in the "Red for Ed" teacher strike wave in Arizona and served as president of his local teachers' union. He grew up in Livonia, Michigan, and graduated from Eastern Michigan University.
