Hugh Cannady is a retired state trooper who served with the North Carolina Highway Patrol for 27 years, retiring as a first sergeant. During his career, he assisted the Surf City Police Department with collision investigations and was the town representative during several hurricanes. He has been active in the community by serving youth sports teams and volunteering for beach cleanups. He was appointed to the Town Council in January 2023 to fill a vacant seat.
