James E. Blancarte is an incumbent judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court. He was appointed by Governor Jerry Brown in December 2018. Prior to his appointment, he served as a court commissioner for the court starting in 2016. His legal career before joining the bench included extensive private practice, specializing in entertainment, media, broadcasting, and international law. He was a partner at several law firms, including Mitchell, Silberberg & Knupp; Jeffer, Mangels, Butler & Marmaro; Carlsmith Ball; and Alvarado Smith. He earned his J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Law in 1978 and his bachelor's degree from Pomona College.
