Jason Mackey was born in California and raised in Hanover, Massachusetts. He studied economics and history at Northeastern University. He has a background as an entrepreneur, having founded four tech startups, an independent magazine, and an early-stage venture fund. He also established the Economic Rights Council, which helps cities design and implement Universal Basic Income programs. In 2019, he moved to Somerville's Ward 5. He has been involved in local politics, serving as the elected Diversity Officer for the Ward 5 Democratic Committee since 2021 and as a commissioner on the Somerville Human Rights Commission. He previously ran for State Representative in 2022 and briefly campaigned for Mayor of Somerville in early 2025 before deciding to run for the Ward 5 City Council seat.
