Joseph A. Backus is a Republican candidate for Michigan State Senate District 12 in the 2026 election. A high school math and science teacher, Backus has spent over three decades in education, including 18 years at Eastpointe Community Schools. He holds a master's degree in educational leadership. Backus has also served as a precinct and state delegate for the Republican Party for approximately 30 years and previously ran for the Macomb Community College Board of Trustees in 2022 and 2024.
