His 44-year career in agriculture has included farming, peanut buying, and agricultural product sales. Ayers served as a Town Commissioner for Oak City for 27 years before being elected to the Martin County Board of Commissioners in 2014. His father was the Mayor of Oak City in the mid-1950s. He has served on various boards and committees, including the Martin County ABC Board and the Martin County Economic Development Corporation Board. He has four children and two grandchildren.
