Kurt Engel, a resident of St. Mary's County since 1997, is a member of the Democratic Central Committee. Born into a military family, he graduated from the US Merchant Marine Academy and served briefly in the Merchant Marine before a 20-year career in the US Navy as a helicopter pilot. He holds an MS in Aeronautical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School. His final naval assignment brought him to Southern Maryland with the relocation of the Naval Air Systems Command. He is married to Celia Engel, a former county teacher, and they have three sons. The current Democratic Central Committee was elected in 2022 and will serve until 2026.
