James has served as an Iowa State Representative for District 71 (formerly 99) since 2019 and is currently the House Minority Whip. A Democrat, she is campaigning for Iowa's 2nd Congressional District in the 2026 primary. Her platform emphasizes lowering healthcare and housing costs, addressing the state's cancer rate, and tackling economic issues. She criticizes Washington D.C. for not serving everyday Iowans.
