Marty Thomas has a long history of public service in Boiling Springs, having served as a community police officer, Police Chief for the town, and on the Town Council previously from 1999 to 2006. He later worked for the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections, reaching the rank of Chief Probation Parole Officer. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from North Carolina State University. He is married with two daughters.
