Candidate for U.S. Congress, Texas District 38 in Houston, Texas

Marvalette Hunter is a candidate running for the United States House of Representatives in Texas’s 38th Congressional District. She served as Chief of Staff for the late Congressman Sylvester Turner (TX-18) and also served as his Chief of Staff during his eight years as Mayor of the City of Houston. As the Congressman's chief administrator and policy advisor, Ms. Hunter planned, managed and directed the administrative, programmatic and budgetary operations of the office and ensured strategic alignment with the Congressman’s legislative priorities and committees, including the Committees on Homeland Security and Science, Space and Technology. Ms. Hunter has more than 30 years’ experience in public policy, affordable housing, economic development, transportation and finance. With a unique combination of experience in both the public and private sector, Ms. Hunter served the City of Houston and the 18th District well by focusing on maximized effectiveness and increased productivity. Ms. Hunter previously served as a Director at Baker Tilly, a leading advisory, tax and assurance firm and Vice President of Community Lending for a Seattle-based Bank, acquired by JPMorgan Chase. She is also President and CEO of 3D Visions Planning Consultants, LLC, a real estate development firm she founded in 2001 specializing in multi-family tax credit and bond financed transactions, transportation infrastructure and master planned communities. Ms. Hunter’s prior public sector experience includes positions as Chief Development Officer for the Harris County Housing Authority and Project Manager for the City of Houston Housing and Community Development Department and Planning Department. Ms. Hunter holds a Masters of Regional Planning from Cornell University and a Bachelor of Architecture from Florida A & M University. She currently serves as trustee of the Rockwell Fund. Ms. Hunter previously served on the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, the Texas Affordable Housing Task Force. She is the author of the “Faith Based Affordable Housing Development and Finance Resource Guide” published by the Fannie Mae Foundation. Ms. Hunter is the first African American woman to hold the position of Mayor's Chief of Staff, and in 2018 was named among the Top 30 Most Influential Women in Houston. She is Married to Dr. Newal Hunter and they have two children, Austin Chandler and Victoria Grace.
