She has served as a middle school social studies teacher, the Assistant Dean of Students at UNC-Chapel Hill, and an adjunct faculty member in the Public Policy Department and School of Social Work at UNC. She holds a bachelor's degree in political science and history, a master's degree in social work, and a law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A significant part of her career has been advocating for survivors of sexual violence, which included co-filing a landmark Title IX complaint against UNC-Chapel Hill in 2013. She has also been actively involved in the community as the parent chair of the Carrboro High School Improvement Team, a precinct worker for local elections, and a member of the Carrboro Board of Adjustment.
