Melissa Merrell was elected to the Union County Board of Commissioners in November 2022 and currently serves as Chair. Previously, she served on the Union County Board of Education for eight years, from 2014 to 2022, including six years as chair. She grew up in eastern North Carolina and earned a degree in Architecture from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Her professional background is in the private sector as a Project Manager. In 2021, she was appointed to the K-12 Education F.A.C.T.S. Task Force by Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson. She has also worked as a Regional Representative for Rep. Dan Bishop and is listed as a District Director for Rep. Mark Harris. She and her husband, Rob, have two adult sons who graduated from Union County Public Schools.
