Michael Whatley is a North Carolina Republican who served as chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party (2019–2024) and as chairman of the Republican National Committee (2024–2025). Raised in Blowing Rock, N.C., he earned a B.A. in history from UNC Charlotte, an M.A. in religion from Wake Forest University, and a J.D. from Notre Dame Law School. He worked as legal counsel to U.S. Sen. Paul Coverdell (R-Ga.), as chief of staff to Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-N.C.), and as a principal deputy assistant secretary at the U.S. Department of Energy (2001–2003). After the 2016 election he led the Trump presidential transition's Energy, Environment, and Agriculture teams. He lives in Gaston County with his wife, Suzanne, and their three children.
