Richard 'Richie' Simmons has served as the Sheriff of Davidson County since being elected. His career in law enforcement began in 1986 with the Mount Airy Police Department, where he was also a member of the Surry County Sheriff's Office SWAT team. In 1991, he joined the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and was stationed in Davidson County. He rose to the rank of sergeant before retiring in 2015 to pursue his goal of becoming sheriff. Throughout his career, he has gained experience investigating a wide range of crimes. He is also an instructor for Basic Law Enforcement Training at Davidson County Community College and is actively involved in numerous community organizations, including the United Way of Davidson County, Thomasville Crime Stoppers, and Meals on Wheels.
