Robert "Butch" Lawter grew up in Bat Cave, North Carolina, and later moved to Spartanburg, South Carolina. He earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Clemson University in 1987 and an M.S. in Civil Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1993. He currently works as a Senior Delivery Officer for WithersRavenel, Inc. Prior to being elected as a county commissioner in 2018, Lawter served on the Clayton Town Council from 1999-2003 and 2008-2018. He has been involved with various community organizations, including the Clayton Recreational Foundation, the Town of Clayton Downtown Development Association, and has served as PTA President at Cooper Elementary. He and his wife, Kimberly, live in Clayton and are members of Greater Heights United Methodist Church.
