Ronald W. Howard, a Republican, has served as the Sheriff of Somerset County, Maryland, since December 2, 2014. His law enforcement career began as a Maryland State Police Trooper, where he served from 1982 to 2008 and was named Trooper of the Year for Barrack X in 2000. Prior to his election as Sheriff, he was the Chief Deputy from 2010 to 2014. Born in Salisbury, Maryland, in March 1963, he is a graduate of Washington High School in Princess Anne. Howard is a member of the Maryland Sheriffs' Association. He initially served as a Democrat and changed his party affiliation to Republican in November 2021.
