Samuel McGuire was born and raised in Sylva, North Carolina. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia in 2015, an M.A. from the University of Kentucky, and a B.A. from Elon University. He is a professor at Western Carolina University, where he teaches U.S. history courses, with a research focus on the Civil War-era in southern Appalachia. He resides in Sylva with his wife and two children.
