Thomas Peter DiNapoli

Tom DiNapoli, a born-and-bred middle-class New Yorker born on Long Island and raised in Albertson, Nassau County, is the 54th New York State Comptroller, in office since February 2007 and the second longest-serving comptroller in state history. He graduated magna cum laude from Hofstra University with a BA in History (1976) and earned a master's degree in human resources management from The New School University's Graduate School of Management and Urban Professions (1988), then worked as a manager in the telecommunications industry. Elected a trustee of the Mineola Board of Education at age 18 in 1972 — the youngest person in New York State history elected to public office at the time — he later worked as an aide in the Assembly and for a congressman before serving 20 years in the New York State Assembly (1987–2007) representing the 16th district in northwestern Nassau County, where he chaired the Environmental Conservation, Local Governments and Governmental Operations committees. Chosen comptroller by a bipartisan vote of the Legislature on February 7, 2007 after Alan Hevesi's resignation, he has been elected statewide four times (2010, 2014, 2018, 2022), twice receiving more votes than any other statewide candidate, and is running in 2026 for a fifth full term.
